“Expelled”:A Ben Stein Documentary on Bias Against Intelligent Design

2008 January 29

Ben Stein, the actor and comedian, has a new documentary coming out this Spring which deals with the issue of academic bias against scientists who espouse Intelligent Design.

Check out www.expelledthemovie.com. Which Stein decked out like the AC-DC front man (think of the song “Who Made Who”) and you get the impression that this movie would be anti-ID.

Athiest Richard Dawkins made the same mistake. In this NYT’s article, Dawkins reports feeling misled– that he believed he was contributing to a movie which defamed ID.

The article goes on to state that Stein doesn’t disavow evolution–however he believes that it isn’t alone enough to explain the origins of life. Stein is also concerned with social Darwinism. He is quoted as saying that if he were to have titled the film he would have called it “From Darwin to Hitler.”

The ac/dc front man is Brian Johnson, you dingbats. You’re thinking of Angus Young.

Thanks. I’d edit my post, but I rather enjoyed being called a dingbat. Thanks.

It’s true. “Intelligent design” is NOT science and scientists really do mock those who are mere “pretenders”. After 20 years of creationist lies, being polite to nincompoops gets a little tiring.

I read this today in The American Spectator (http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=12759) that comments on Dawkins’ conversation with Ben Stein in the movie.

The double irony is that Dawkins’s second encounter with Ben Stein is perhaps the high point of the film. Dawkins, speaking with refreshing frankness, comes across as not in the slightest bit confused or caught off guard. He allows that science knows nothing about the origin of life, and that, yes, the Darwinian message is antithetical to religion. He surprises us, too, by allowing that if life really was designed, the designing must have been done by intelligent beings elsewhere in the cosmos who themselves evolved by naturalistic means. Their designs were then somehow transported down to Earth. (Francis Crick of DNA fame took the same view in the 1980s.) Cornell’s Provine was also excellent, pulling no punches in telling how his own youthful faith did not long survive his instruction in the Darwinian catechism.

Refreshing to see and watch and I think “caught off guard” is a telling explanation for tenure seeking guilds we call “scientists”! This decidedly is NOT maligning science! Debates are what we have when probability is what we observe. Eliminating a debate is rich in irony for someone who has “facts” on their side!

“He allows that science knows nothing about the origin of life”

Then he has not read the February issue of Discover magazine (only the most recent of hundreds of publications).

“This decidedly is NOT maligning science!”

Of course it is. These “debates” are political. There is no scientific debate about evolution. (Evolution, of course, has nothing to do with the “origin of life” – two entirely different subjects that Ben Stein would love to confuse you about.)
