Several public schools in lower-income districts across the nation are considering longer school days on the eve of over 10,000 schools failing Federal standards for public schools. The thinking is that lower income families don’t have access to after school tutoring or other enrichment activities.

Meanwhile, some have expressed concern that this plan lacks equity for middle-income classed children; These children too should have access to these educational opportunities.

(editors note: Read Keith’s recent review of Dr. Elkind’s new book  and feel the tension.)
