Megachurch CHOOSES to downsize!

This is interesting and since I am acquainted with this church (Garnett Church of Christ, in Tulsa, OK) it came as a surprise to see this editorial in Leadership Journal (http://www.christianitytoday.com/le/2007/001/1.49.html) about how the church leadership INTENTIONALLY decided to NOT BE a MEGA CHURCH. Note the relationship with children’s ministry, but I find it couragous and midly amusing that someone could think it spiritual to DOWNSIZE when they thought it unspiritual to GROW. Isn’t that the fallacy of opposites?

    hmmm.

I read a story like this and realize that there is no formula. The pastor obviously adopted a emergent church agenda that either prompted this change of course or justified it after the fact.

This is an interesting story, but not a perscriptive one. God can call one pastor to build a mega-church and another to “devolve” an institution-bound church. If each pastor is truly hearing from God both can be the “right answer.”

Yes Keith, the devil is in the “or.”

I like this a lot. I do not like megachurches because I believe that they work counter to the Gospel in many situations.

Seeing a church grow smaller may not be a bad thing. I only skimmed the article, but I am curious what kind of response this church will receive from megachurches.
