Spiritual Gifts For Children?
A mini-rant:
I'm still recovering from this weekend's kids' retreat. More specifically, I'm recovering from curriculum writing for the retreat. I wanted to teach my elementary aged children about discovering their uniqueness and what the spiritual gifts are. I wanted the kids to understand that Christianity as adventure and not just sin management. I believe children need to understand that on the day they became friends with Christ that he gave them a supernatural capacity, a spiritual gift, that makes a big about God and builds the church.
But you can't purchase that curriculum. At least not anywhere I could see. Could it be that we adults truly don't believe that God gives children spiritual gifts? Do we believe that children– with the help of their parents– can't assess and develop these gifts?
I spent a few late nights until three creating a curriculum loosely based on Max Lucado's "Cure For the Common Life" to help kids understand that their interests and hobbies are clues to help them understand their design. When I got to the session on the gifts, I was on my own. There was another late night.
It's tragic that the Church doesn't spend it's time emphasizing mission and adventure with it's children. I'm convinced that the only prophylaxis that will protect our children from the evils of the world is the Great Commission. If our children are focused on transforming the world they will be greatly protected from pressures to be transformed by it. And implicit in a Great Commission is a great equipping. It's our job, fellow Children's Ministers, to help our children see themselves as divine change agents.
Could it be the subtle bigotry of low expectations in action once again? WOW, Larry! This is fantastic! We do delve into that topic with the concept of “Roles” or “Tasks” assigned to students as PRECURSORS to the discovery of spiritual gifts. But these mask the truly profound spiritual stem-cell implant that occurs the moment of salvation!!!! Preach It–Then Publish It!!!!!!
I’m not ready for publication because of the difficulty of assessment. However, I taught what the gifts were using a “jig saw” excersize. Perhaps the benefit with the children was to build expectation in them.
the guidelines I gave them to discover their gifts were…
1) Ask yourself what you are good at. Are there clues in your “design”? (I adapted Max Lucado’s S.T.O.R.Y. acroymn for this.)
2) Ask God what your gift is.
3) Bug your parents. They are experts in studying you.
4) Experiment. Live for a week or two pretending you had a certain gift. Did it fit?
So instead of the children walking away “knowing” or “thinking” they knew what their gifts were, I started a process. A few children, after a week, a reporting what they suspect God gave them.
Of course, now I have to make sure I have ministry opps. ready.
I would live to the curriculum you came up with for your retreat. We have been talking a lot lately about how to involve our kids in ministry and are planning a summer retreat right now.
Robin, too of the sessions I presented were so derivative from Max Lucado's book that I don't think I can ethically share them. I tweaked his S.T.O.R.Y. acroymn, and changed it to ST.O.R.Y. (Instead of "Subject" and "Topic" I combined the two and created "STrengths"
Grab "A Cure For the Common Life", Lucado's latest offering. That's a great place to start. Give me a few weeks and I'll give the session on gifts to kidology.org. They have the capacity to store curriculum and give it away to their customers.
As far as publishing it, Keith. I think if the market existed, a book would be selling by now. I'm happy to give it away… at least the parts that where I was the primary creator.
I had the same problem 3 years ago!!! I ended up just using a scaled down version of the Spritiual Gifts Assessment. It took me a VERY long time to change it into KID FRIENDLY language!! It worked really well!!! Some of the kids still talk about that lesson!
I too have seen this problem – it’s hard to find good stuff that hits the whole spectrum of the gifts. I have found some that do well in portion- Willie George’s Curriculum being one. there is also an excellent curriculm on teaching the prphetic to children out of a church in Northern California. But for the most part I find the need falls on me to take care of…
This is also a topic of much interest to me. I have done a little curriculum writing as well. There is some info and basic curriculum available for free on the vineyard.ca website. It was created a number of years ago, but with the intent that the same Holy Spirit lives in children when they begin their relationship with Jesus. There is an intro manual and some units that you can download and make yours. I have adapted a couple. Wanted to share if you find it useful. God bless!!
Sorry, in the last comment I forgot to say that it is under “more resources” and in “Children’s Curriculum”. Hope that makes it easier for you to find!
Great web site, Renee. Bookmarked it.
What is the acronym for ST.O.R.Y.?
Thanks, Amy
You are exactly right. I found your website searching for some place who has a spiritual gifts inventory for children. How quickly we forget how we wanted to be useful as children. You are on to a great idea – I would love to see you publish it!
Max Lucado’s S.T.O.R.Y is Subject, Topic, Optimum Performance, Relationshis, YES!
I combined the S and the T for STrengths.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has some good Spiritual Gift resources at http://www.elca.org/christianeducation/programplanners/2005CEProgramPlanner/spiritualgifts.html
Thanks for that tip, I can’t believe I didn’t find this before when looking for ELCA resources!
This looks really helpful from first glance, so I hope others have looked at it too!!
Did Emily W. ever send someone her Kid Friendly Spiritual gifts assesment or a way to contact her if she is willing to share it? I too am looking for a lesson on Spiritual gifts for early elementary school age.
Hi! Did Kim W. receive info on Emily W.’s Kid friendly Spiritual gifts assessment because I am interested in the same information. Thank you!
Thanks for this and the ensuing discussion. I happened to be at the beginning of a little series on the spiritual gifts in Romans 12 with my 6-11 year olds. I ended up building my own evaluation based on a various things I picked up over the years, plus some ideas from the Lutheran site.
Part 1 is 28 questions. Part 2 is 7 archetypes that I explained to the kids and asked them to rank how they identified with each. Both parts could use some improvement, but they worked fairly well. Feel free to use and modify them as you see fit.

I am starting a series on Spiritual Gifts with my preteens tomorrow. I wrote my own inventory and am writing all of the lessons because I can’t find anything either and because I wanted to include a mentoring aspect (pairing kids up with adults and teens who have the same gift and thus getting them more involved with the different areas in the church). I’m also going to have gift groups which will meet regularly to help plan different aspects of the CFM program. I think it’s important that the kids are involved in the planning process. After all, it’s their program!
How awesome that we are all working on the same thing!
Your curriculum sounds great. It sounds just what the youth of the Church could use.
Check out the Kids In Ministry website for some awesome curriculum !! I have used the Hearing God’s Voice with the children I work with. I have not found curriculum anywhere like this!

Being in ministry for over 30 years (started at 17 when I first found Christ) – and most of that with children, I agree with the need for such resouces for children – however it deeply bothers me when people speak of such things missing as being a tragic church fault. You and I are the church, so we should understand that we all are at fault – if fault is to be found. However, isn’t it better matched with the teachings of our leader, when He had Paul write to the Ephesians (4:8-9) to think about the good things and excellent and praiseworthy, to be honored, humbled, and praise God that He has led you at this time to create such admirable resources for children!
Thanks for the correction, Della.
Time for the Church of Jesus Christ to train up their children in spiritual matters. We begin this life as spiritual beings and have to learn the Lord’s voice young. Otherwise, the world’s many voices will train them.
I also believe our children need to understand that on the day they became friends with Christ that He DID give them a supernatural capacity, a spiritual gift and that He wants them to use it.
We are saying that our children are our up-coming revolutionist but we are not teaching them how to do it. Having supernatural experiences at young ages is POSSIBLE!
I have found a curriculum from the Bethel out of Redding, California. It’s called Children’s Supernatural by Deborah Reed. It teaches Salvation, Baptism, Communion, Righteousness/Sanctification, Tithes & Offerings, Bible Reading & Fasting, The Body of Christ, Covenant, The Family of God, and Prayer.Four weeks of Worship,Healing and Prophecy, The children’s church curriculum is designed to introduce children to the basics of living the “Supernatural” Christian life.
Our church is planning on buying this. I saw your concerns and thought I would invite you to take a look at it.
heres the website:

then click on Deborah Reed on the left.
I am previewing a curriculum called Discover Your Gifts from Faith Alive Christian Resources. It is written for grades 6-8. Published in 2006–how about that, Larry? Anyway, it looks great to me! The comments from others are very helpful because I want to explore spiritual gifts with younger children as well. Thanks, everyone.
What do you like about the curriculum, Joyce? Can it be bent younger?
I am teaching 1ST & 2ND graders on the gifts of the spirit in Sunday school tomorrow. I am painfully aware that we as a church are sorely lacking in encouraging and explaining the gifts of the spirit. I’m having trouble finding much on the subject on the net. I pray God will show me how to reach their hearts tomorrow and may HE GIVE THEM A DESIRE TO SEEK OUT THEIR GIFTS.

Here is the website store for all of you!! Willie George has an awesome curriculum for kids with a 13 week session on the spiritual gifts!! As a child I was in his ministry and now i am a children’s pastor and use this curriculum and the children have an undoubted knowledge of the spiritual gift with application!
Have you looked at Discover Your Children’s Gifts by Don & Katie Fortune? It’s not a curriculum but it is the only thing I have found about gifs in children.
… a scaled down version of the ‘Spiritual Gifts Assessment’ …kid friendly language”, Posted by Emily W. 4 May 06
Has there ever been any more information on this curriculum she rewrote? My church is doing a unit emphasizing spiritual gifts and talents. Whats the latest on this subject?
Hey..totally off subject, but I am desparately seeking a mentoring program for children who have recently been baptized. I usually work with N-4 year olds, but due to circumstances beyond my control! am handling K-5th graders! I have searched everywhere for some type of cirriculum where I could have a mentor for children after baptism and can find nothing! If anyone has any suggestions I am all for it! I can’t believe no one at my church has ever thought of this before, we have sessions and cirriculum for before baptism, but what about after…dunk your good or what? Any way, help!
This is the spiritual gifts assessment we used at our Children’s Camp several years ago. It was simple to use and led to some great discussion with our children. Blessings!
